A piece of wasteland has been transformed into a first class chipping green. Previously, the land was a mixture of trees and scrub, but seeing the potential, Ealing Golf Club wanted to turn this area in to a facility for their members. Greg managed the project and, along with the designer, set about realizing one of the best chipping greens in the county.
One challenge was to give the new green the same playing characteristics as the older main greens out on the course which are around 100 years old. To achieve this, Greg firstly reduced the rootzone layer from the traditional 300mm to 250mm, allowing moisture to sit in the rootzone more than in your newer U.S.G.A grade. Next, Poa ‘cores’ were brought in from the main greens. This ensures that the grass species will be exactly the same. It worked so well that the green was in play after just 12 weeks and the members are delighted with the addition.
